David was angry and sad. As a consequence of his PTSD, many of David’s relationships had fallen away during the past several years, including his relationship with his son. During an iRest session, he took time to sense his body for feelings and emotions that were present. His attention was immediately drawn to a feeling in his throat that he described as dense, thick, and contracted. He reported that he’d tried all sorts of ways “to heal it, but it keeps coming back, and I don’t know what it wants.”

I asked him to close his eyes and imagine the sensations in his throat walking in through a door. Then, I asked him to describe what the sensation in his throat looked like. Without hesitation he answered, “A bear.” I asked him to ask the bear the three questions about want, need, and actions, and to respond as if he were the bear answering each question. Taking his time he responded, “I want you to stop and listen to me. I need you to pay attention to me or I’m going to keep growling and bothering you until you do. You need to call your son and make amends.” David opened his eyes with new understanding about what he’d been avoiding the past two years.

Amazingly, David, right then and there in my office, took out his cell phone, called his son, and proceeded to have the beginning of what would be a complete reconciliation with his son. By listening to his feelings and emotions, David took an action that enabled him to feel empowered and in control of his life.

Using your active imagination is a powerful way of working with your feelings and emotions. Imagining them allows you the opportunity to speak with them as if you’re interacting with an actual person.

It’s most important to discover the actions you need to take in response to each feeling and emotion that you experience. Then, by taking action, your feelings and emotions will have delivered their messages and can go on their way. Keep in mind during each and every step toward healing your PTSD that every feeling and emotion you experience is a messenger, inviting you to take an action. Taking these actions empowers you!
